This comfortably hip fish & seafood restaurant is undoubtedly the best of its kind in Heraklion. It has a decidedly laid-back cottage feeling with its diverse assortment of whitewashed chairs and benches with pale green and orange accents. Casual summertime dining is in the sweet city park that surrounds the restaurant. The artfully presented fresh fish and seafood offerings include both time-honored Cretan fare and some inventive fusion cuisine. Main courses include Pasta with Lobster, and excellent grouper and salmon. Sunday lunch includes traditional dishes from the wood oven. The only decent fresh Sushi in town every Wednesday and by far the best selection of quality Cretan and Greek white wines.

In this family-run restaurant owned by two brothers (one of whom is the Chef), you dine in the courtyard of a carefully reconstructed 16th century stone house complete with its own stone well. The extensive menu is liberally-interpreted Greek cuisine from all parts of the country with Mediterranean overtones. There are a number of soups, which is a special treat since they are not found often on Cretan menus. Enjoy such delicacies as the grilled rabbit with anthogalo cheese, grilled apaki (smoked pork) and haloumi, or the grilled veggies with honey and garlic. Sauces are exceptionally fresh and interesting. The wine list is respectable, the menus very attractive and the service is extremely amiable and efficient.

This modern restaurant specializing in traditional and creative Cretan cuisine commands a prime spot overlooking the popular Kitroplatia Beach. Inside the pale neutrals of the walls and flagstones and subtle lighting make for a calm, soothing ambiance or outside dining is on the edge of the small blue-flag beach. Using only the best foodstuffs is essential to Barko’s gastronomic approach. New to the dining scene in Hersonissos, Coast Med is sure to become a favorite. The setting is deliberately unpretentious even though the location―5 meters from the edge of the sea, with its own beach, is sublime. Anyone who has endured evenings of mediocre meze, will find the starters here faith-restoring. They all have a twist, like the Feta Saganki in a crust with sesame seeds and a sweet-sour chili sauce. Don’t get too seduced by them though, because the main courses are inviting and adventurous. Try the Grouper with seasonal wild greens and lemon-ginger sauce or choose your lobster live from the tank or your freshly caught fish. The touch of the well-travelled owner can be seen throughout, but especially in the Lemon Meringue pie―a much-loved dessert not found much outside the U.S. They also have their own beach with good quality lounge chairs, foot baths and excellent service for whatever you may require.

Lovely courtyard dining in the historic old town with plenty of cool, soothing vegetation. Creative Greek and Mediterranean cuisine mix together in harmony on the menu. Try the „Taste Nest” salad with ruccola, red cabbage, currants and walnuts with a honey-balsamic dressing all in a phyllo pastry nest. There is a good grill selection with fresh meats, as well as some other interesting main courses, such as pork sirloin with Aegina nuts and plums. Fresh pastas round out the menu. Decent wine selection and attentive service.

This intimate upscale restaurant is a relatively new addition to the Agios Nikolaos dining scene. There is a splendid view of the harbour from either the air-conditioned side, or take in the sea air from the the wide open windows. Soothing pale blues and crisp whites enhance the subtle nautical ambiance. The menu marries quality Cretan products (meat, fish, olive oil and herbs) with Mediterranean cuisine (with an Italian slant). The Tiramisù is simply divine, or ask for the Crêpes for dessert and you will see the lost art of table flambé revived.

Kritamon restaurant Arhanes

This utterly charming restaurant is nestled in a lovingly restored house on a narrow cobblestone street just behind the main square of Arhanes. The young Chef/ Owner named it after the wild Greek seaside herb known more commonly as Samphire or Sea Fennel. First-rate, mostly organic raw materials and the revival of forgotten tastes and products are of paramount importance in the wonderful compilations such as the graviera saganaki with a pistachio crust and carob honey. There are wonderfully inventive salads  such as his Roka with pears, sun-dried tomatoes, 2 different cheeses and an amazing secret vinaigrette. The sautéed lavraki with lemon risotto is heavenly. The house wines, which are excellent,  are produced by a small local vintner especially for Kritamon. Desserts are all paradise on a plate. Easily one of the best on the island!

The culinary experience in Heraklion is enriched each season with the re-opening of Brillant Gourmet Restaurant. The unique aesthetics of the eye-catching, partly Art Deco, partly “industrialist” interior and distinctively elegant table appointments are surpassed only by the tempting high quality, very creative Cretan dishes of Chef Petros Kosmadakis and his team. As a starter, try the mixed meat meatballs (keftedes) with mastic, stuffed with peppery graviera cheese and roasted lemon sauce or the wrapped Arabic pitas with roasted chicken, crunchy veggies and a sauce of caper leaves or an interesting velouté soup of grouper with lime. The mains are no less brilliant. Here you can choose between items on the grill or from the creative Cretan category such as stuffed baby goat with fennel & myzithra with artichoke purée and lemon sauce. Save room for dessert… if you can. The wine list is exemplary and they often have special dinners.

"Sailing to taste" is a newcomer along the seaside row of eateries and cafés just after the Fortezza. The famous Athenian Chef Yiannis Baxevanis is the culinary mastermind here and this is evident from the touches of genius that liven up ordinary fare such as the feta saganaki in a light phyllo crust with caramelized figs or the Grilled Calamari stuffed with Cretan graviera, tomato and the hard-to-find kritamon (sea-fennel). The interior on blustery winter days is cosy and colourful. The surroundings may be considered humble, but like the food, there is a lot of creativity and ingenuity. A must try in Rethymno!

The newest incarnation of this taverna, called Liasti (meaning sun-dried) is a sure bet. It is an oasis of calm tucked away at the end of a dead-end street off the busy Evans. In good weather dine under enormous old “Mouria” trees or inside an old house where time stood still.  Everything is excellent and there are many original “sun-dried tomato” house specials such as a pita with pastourma, cheese and sun-dried tomatoes or the salad of wild greens with sun-dried tomatoes, kefalotiri and a fabulous pomegranate vinaigrette. Don’t miss the Pork Hock baked with honey. Very friendly and knowledgeable service by one of the owners. (The other is the Chef.) Superb value for money.

A spiffy, stylish restaurant to liven up the otherwise dull dining scene in Kokkini Hani. Big open space that is bright, airy and cheerful with good quality, comfortable white-washed furniture and a play area to keep the kids occupied. Food is clever, creative and well-presented. The specialty is definitely the Argentine BBQ steak and top quality T-bone & Rib Eye steaks which have been properly aged and served to perfection.  They are served with good bbq sauces and excellent potatoes. New on the menu are Amercian-style spare-ribs. They are also good with pastas, vegetables and salads.  Service is affable and efficient. There is an excellent 4-piece band that plays great easy-listening/dancing music on weekend nights.

This is a well-loved eatery in the city center, on a quaint little square a stone’s throw from the sea. With the help of an ironstone wood oven, the young Chef/Owner creates some compelling dishes with the supreme taste of slowly-cooked foods. Among the many memorable items is a tart of artichokes (like an artichoke quiche) saffron risotto with mushrooms, a pork shank cooked for 6-7 hours and a superb steak from Black Angus, served rare… for those in the know. Desserts include a molten chocolate cake that is divine.  The wine list has the best local producers.

This new eatery on the Heraklion casual dining scene, meaning "General Store of Tastes", is really partly a store, where you can buy home-made items like sauces and marinated cheeses and retro food and beverage products. The food is quality and fresh. There are some unusual starters, cooked foods and daily specials and often they try something new from other countries like a Portugese-style Cod. Service is attentive and very friendly. All the fab desserts such as chocolate baklava for example are made on the premises.  Definitely worth going!

Enjoy for example, the seafood „giouvetsi”(with orzo rather than standard risotto), or as a starter, mini arabic pitas with grilled haloumi and parsley sauce. Outdoor dining on their large porch with swaying tamarisk trees is very relaxing.

This old Venetian-era restaurant and its accompanying hotel in the heart of old town Rethymno boasts being in the same location for 700 years. Stone-flagged floors, mosaics and antique furniture add to the old- world charm. The cuisine artfully blends Mediterranean and Cretan such as the Mille-Feuille of salmon with avocado and sour myzithra cheese. Definitely spare time for the wine. The owner is a real buff and the cellar is impressive, which is why it continues to win awards throughout Greece.

Take an excursion to the village of Krasi to see the over 1000 year-old Platanos tree and work up an appetite for some real, traditional Cretan food. On hot autumn days, the inviting pergola-covered porch offers a cool respite, or go for mountain views on the roof garden. If it is cooler at night, there are 2 fireplaces inside for atmosphere and warmth. This is down-home, honest, quality fare at its best. Order whatever comes from the wood-burning oven, be it lamb, piglet, chicken. The house salad is resplendent with wild, bitter mountain greens, desserts are inventive and delicious and house wines are very drinkable.
